Felted Taxidermy Kit: Animal on a Plaque

A felted taxidermy snimal or creature on a plaque is a fun project that combines needle felting and woodworking. The Magic Trout Imaginarium created this project in partnership with the Industry Training Authority (ITA Youth) for the ITA Maker Club Manual.

WHAT IS NEEDLE FELTING?

Needle felting involves using a sharp barbed needle to sculpt and shape wool roving into 3D shapes like animals, landscapes, food, or even masks or clothing.  Many people we’ve taught to felt at workshops at schools, libraries and event comment on how easy and stress relieving it is! A little stabbing really gets the stress out; hence why teachers love felting so much!

Wool is a material for knitting, weaving, crocheting and even wet felting. Surprisingly, the phenomenon of needle felting only came about with the invention of the industrial felting machine. Someone, somewhere got the brilliant idea to remove a single needle from the machine and use it to sculpt.

In needle felting, it is best to use wool that catches easily on felting needles. All of the Magic Trout Imaginarium’s felting kits use Corriedale wool which is sustainable. Our wool is sourced from Ashford in New Zealand. Best of all, shford wool is colored with natural non toxic dyes.
